Dr Kate Lynch

Dr Kate Lynch (née Williamson) is a gastroenterologist and hepatologist and is Head of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Services at Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH). Her original medical and specialty training was at University of Adelaide and RAH. She then spent 7 years at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK, where she performed a clinical fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gastroenterology and hepatology, as well as undertaking both clinical and lab-based research.

She returned to Adelaide in 2019, after completing her Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford, entitled “Peripheral blood, Liver and Intestine-specific lymphocytes in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease”.

Dr Lynch has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and has spoken internationally on her research. Her special expertise lies in IBD and PSC. She is involved in various clinical trials of novel therapies in IBD, as well as epidemiological research and new therapies in PSC. Her research interests include gut-homing T-cells in PSC/IBD, the effect of vedolizumab on the human gut and the liver at a cellular level, biomarkers in IBD, clinical prognostication in PSC, and adolescent transition in IBD and autoimmune liver disease.

Her focus for 2023 is to understand more about adolescent transition in IBD – where paediatric patients are transitioning to, what the current process and experience is, whether the quality of the experience corresponds with clinical outcomes or complications, and what improvements can be made. The aim is to develop a new IBD transition programme between Women’s and Children’s Hospital and RAH to allow for a better experience for patients and better quality of life.
